The Hawaiian Community Center Association is a recognized non-profit
organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Taxation Code
dedicated to perpetuating and preserving the Hawaiian Culture by 1) hosting the
annual Ho'oulu Lahui Craft & Cultural Fair where workshops are conducted to
share in a day of exchange, the traditional dance, music, language, values and
traditions, and arts and crafts of the people of Hawai'i; 2) supporting local na
halau and their cultural presentations of music and dance; 3) organizing
community events that bring visibility and revenue into the Hawaiian community;
and 4) by participating in various fundraising events in support of local
community organizations.
The Ho'oulu Lahui Craft & Cultural Fair is a one-day annual celebration
hosted by the HCCA. Morning workshops begin the day's activities of traditional
Hawaiian dance, music, language, values and traditions and arts and crafts. The
afternoon is dedicated to a music and dance ho'ike by those participating in the
workshops and the haumana of local halau.
Throughout the year, the HCCA provides monetary and in-kind support to local
halau and the programs they present. Support is based upon the program's need
and budget approval. Many times support is spontaneous but always rewarding. The
HCCA has a mandate to preserve the values and traditions of the Hawaiian culture
much of which is found in its music and dance.
Each year, support is asked of the HCCA to coordinate special events in the
community that do not appear in its annual budget allocations. Events such as
concerts that feature talent from Hawai'i and workshops that are needs-specific.
The annual Ho'oulu Lahui Cultural Fair is an example of the work that HCCA does
and is the result of a need to bring local halau together for one day each year
to share each other's experiences. It is a time to rekindle old friendships, a
time to experience first hand the values and traditions of the Hawaiian people,
a time to learn, and a time to grow. It serves as a cultural enrichment
experience that contributes to the perpetuation and preservation of the Hawaiian
culture. It is a social event that brings the community together in the spirit
of aloha (love) and lokahi (unity).
On an annual basis, the HCCA participates in various fundraising events in
support of local community organizations such as the Pacific Islander Festival
sponsored the City of Los Angeles and the Pacific Islander Community Council [of
which HCCA is a member.] The festival is held each May to celebrate the nation
wide recognition of Asian Pacific Heritage Month. In July of each year, the HCCA
supports the annual Ho'olaule'a sponsored by the Hawaiian Inter-Club Council of
Southern California [of which HCCA is a member].
